Tier 4 – The ‘oh wow, he’s a free agent too?’ group

This group of free agents is evidence of the depth of this year’s class. These players may be established in the league or they may just be solid contributors, but they’re guys who can play and start and maybe even excel in Vic Fangio’s defense.

A’Shawn Robinson, Detroit Lions

A bull-rushing, run stuffing interior lineman, Robinson is not a diverse pass rusher by any means on the interior, but he can play the first two downs extremely well.

The former second-rounder out of Alabama may have untapped pass rush potential yet.

Jonathan Bullard, Arizona Cardinals

Bullard has some history with Vic Fangio in Chicago and is coming off of a year in which he racked up a career-high seven hits on the quarterback in only nine games with six starts.

He could be an option for depth.

Timmy Jernigan, Philadelphia Eagles

Perhaps best fit as a full-time 3T defensive tackle, Timmy Jernigan has showed big potential as a pass rusher from the defensive interior in his time in the NFL, but he’s also struggled with injuries.

Danny Shelton, New England Patriots

Shelton has thrived as a Patriot and put up 61 tackles, six QB hits, and three sacks this past season, all of which were career highs.

He only plays half the snaps, but he’s a valuable early-down defender who is hitting his stride as an NFL player.

Rodney Gunter, Arizona Cardinals

Although Gunter is not a household name, he’s been a productive pass rusher for the past couple of seasons and has done so flying under the radar.

He has 29 total pressures over the last two seasons, including 7.5 sacks along with 20 tackles for loss.
