2. Byron Jones, cornerback (Cowboys)

One of the top free agents on the open market this offseason should be Dallas Cowboys cornerback Byron Jones.

Although I have some concern about his lack of ball production (two career interceptions in five seasons) there’s no doubt about his ability to play tight coverage and from a variety of positions.

The Broncos have plenty of young options at the cornerback position already on the roster, so adding a veteran in free agency is the best course of action for this team.

If the price for Chris Harris Jr. has already exceeded what the Broncos are willing to pay for him, Jones is a very acceptable alternative. Not only can he play outside corner (where he may be best suited) but he can also match up with tight ends, play the nickel, or play safety.

I would envision him as an outside corner in Fangio’s defense, in which case the Broncos could put Bryce Callahan at the nickel (or re-sign Will Parks to play it) and keep developing their youth at corner.

Over the last two seasons, Jones has allowed just over 52 percent of passes thrown his direction to be completed.

I think in Vic Fangio’s defense, which has been historically kind to defensive backs, Jones would be able to pick off a lot of passes and take advantage of the Broncos’ stellar pass rush, which will get even better this offseason.
