Need #3: Cornerback

The potential departure of Chris Harris Jr. in free agency makes cornerback one of the top areas of need for the Denver Broncos heading into the 2020 offseason.

Although Harris leaving would sting due to the fact that he’s been with the team and playing at an elite level since 2011, the Broncos would not be without a variety of solutions at the position, especially in 2020 free agency.

Even without Harris on board, the Broncos’ potential crop of 2020 cornerbacks isn’t making me lose sleep at night:

  • Bryce Callahan
  • Isaac Yiadom
  • Davontae Harris
  • De’Vante Bausby
  • Duke Dawson

If Callahan is back healthy, and that’s the assumption at this point, I like the young players the Broncos have enough here to believe they don’t need to go throwing a first-round pick at cornerback.

They also may not have to overspend in free agency. If a player like Prince Amukamara is let go by the Chicago Bears, he could be an ideal fit while the Broncos continue to bring up their younger players.

Isaac Yiadom showed some promise down the stretch despite his ridiculous penalty against the Raiders. Davontae Harris also showed flashes throughout the season and De’Vante Bausby was looking like a legit starter solution prior to his spinal injury.

Still, there are question marks here.

The Broncos should still try to bring Harris back in my opinion, but they should not overpay. I think they should be mindful of their young talent in-house as well as be ready to bring in a veteran in free agency, but they do not need to break the bank here.

They could go for a big fish like Logan Ryan of the Titans, but the Broncos could make a variety of moves at cornerback that would be fine considering the plethora of options they have available.

How to fix the CB need: Take a patient approach in free agency (sign a veteran), believe in the development of in-house youth, and take a shot on upside in the 2020 NFL Draft if you get it.
