Need #2: Defensive line

Similar to the Broncos’ need on the offensive line, the team’s need on the defensive line is multiple.

Not only do the Broncos likely need to find a starting defensive end, but they also need to add depth behind Mike Purcell at nose tackle.

Derek Wolfe and Shelby Harris are both heading to free agency, but it feels like the former is likely to stick around.

If Wolfe returns to the Broncos, the team can insert 2019 third-round pick Dre’Mont Jones into the other starting defensive end position, but how comfortably?

The team should be feeling good about where Mike Purcell is at as far as being a fit in this defense, and as a restricted free agent, he will undoubtedly be tendered and return to the Broncos in 2020.

This year’s defensive line class in free agency is already strong, and we’re not even to the part of the offseason where roster cuts are happening. The Broncos could decide that Dre’Mont Jones is a starter but perhaps still a player who splits time with someone. Maybe he would split time with Purcell as the Broncos shift their defensive front and the team will pursue two defensive ends in free agency.

This is a position group where the Broncos have flexibility, but the strength of this offseason is more so in free agency than the 2020 NFL Draft.

How to fix the DL needs: Address in free agency, look for value in the 2020 NFL Draft.
