The Denver Broncos have cap space and draft capital to completely shift the tide of the team in 2020. Here are their top needs and where to fill them.

The Denver Broncos are locked, loaded, and ready — pun fully intended — to turn their ship around after four straight seasons adrift from the playoffs following the Super Bowl 50 victory and subsequent retirement of quarterback Peyton Manning.

Although it’s still very early in Drew Lock’s NFL career, the young quarterback has come in and given the Denver Broncos and all of Broncos Country hope that the quarterback position might have a solution for the foreseeable future.

The Broncos have to approach this offseason as though Lock is the future at the position and do everything they can to build around him. Thankfully, they have plenty of assets already to do so, and plenty more where that came from.

Not only do the Broncos have a promising, young roster of players, but they also have enviable draft capital and a fair amount of cap space to further build this roster with.

2020 NFL Draft capital (compensatory picks not yet announced)

  • 1st round (15th overall)
  • 2nd round
  • 3rd round
  • 3rd round (from Steelers)
  • 3rd round (from 49ers)
  • 4th round
  • 4th round (from 49ers)
  • 6th round (from Redskins)
  • 7th round (from Patriots)

2020 cap space: $60.37 million

The Broncos can also add another $10.05 million in cap space with the release of quarterback Joe Flacco as well as another $8.44 million by releasing guard Ron Leary.

There are a number of other moves they could make to get well over $80 million in cap space.

Key Free Agents (unrestricted)

  • Justin Simmons, safety
  • Chris Harris Jr., cornerback
  • Derek Wolfe, defensive lineman
  • Shelby Harris, defensive lineman
  • Connor McGovern, center
  • Will Parks, defensive back
  • Jeremiah Attaochu, outside linebacker
  • Adam Gotsis, defensive line
  • Theo Riddick, running back
  • Devontae Booker, running back

The Broncos have decisions to make about in-house players, but we know at this point that Justin Simmons is going to be back with the team, whether it’s on a long-term deal or the franchise tag.

With all of this information considered, where are the Broncos’ top needs heading into the 2020 offseason? How will they address them, whether through free agency or the 2020 NFL Draft?

Let’s put on our John Elway hats and assemble the Broncos’ to-do list for the 2020 offseason, prioritizing needs and identifying where to address them.
