Akeem Davis-Gaither has slowly but surely been gaining some top 100 steam, and he’s my first defensive pick in this mock draft for a good reason.

The Broncos have a decision to make upcoming with Todd Davis’ contract. They can pick it up and pay Davis his $5 million salary with a $6 million cap hit, or they can let Davis go and save $5 million against the 2020 salary cap.

With Josey Jewell on the roster, I think the Broncos could afford to make that move and try to upgrade their linebacker group through free agency or the NFL Draft.

There’s not much star power in this class at the off-ball linebacker spots, but Davis-Gaither is going to become a fan favorite after the Senior Bowl later in January — book it — and he is the type of playmaker in space the Broncos need.

Paired with Alexander Johnson, I think Davis-Gaither gives this team a chance to have a really dynamic set of linebackers who can attack, play in space, play sideline-to-sideline, and stay on the field all three downs.

This guy is especially productive in coverage, which the Broncos desperately need.
