Denver Broncos 2020 mock draft: Doubling up on wide receiver
There are a ton of mock drafts out there pegging Henry Ruggs III to the Denver Broncos and a couple of issues have come up repeatedly, at least from what I’ve seen.
- “John Elway doesn’t draft Alabama players”
- “He won’t be there at 15”
Those are both valid statements at this point. Elway hasn’t drafted Nick Saban’s players and Ruggs’ speed is such that he might just be a priority for some team prior to the 15th overall pick.
I’ll offer my thoughts.
I don’t think Elway has anything against Alabama players, though I don’t know that for certain. He hasn’t drafted Alabama guys and that’s an interesting note, but I’m of the opinion that you draft guys based on how they play not where they play.
As far as Ruggs being there at 15, there will be at least four picks ahead of Denver that are not Ruggs — Joe Burrow, Chase Young, Tua Tagovailoa, and Jeff Okudah. Those guys could very well be the top four picks in the draft in some order.
With that said, that means that of the other 10 selections, there have to be three receivers off the board in order for the Broncos to not get one of Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy, or CeeDee Lamb.
I think it’s pretty likely one of them is there at 15.
If it’s Ruggs? Fantastic.
This might be the fastest player we’ve ever seen at the Scouting Combine, and his speed shows up in games. He was a big play every time he touched the ball for Alabama and his explosiveness is exactly the type of weapon this Denver Broncos’ offense needs to pair with Courtland Sutton.
I think you could use Ruggs outside or in the slot, and I think he’s going to be a nightmare for teams to cover at the next level. Thinking about the opportunities this offense will have with both he and Courtland Sutton is very exciting.
