The past is in the past…?

Can John Elway put the past aside after Kaepernick met him face to face and ultimately rejected his offer to play for the Broncos?

The Broncos are apparently less than $5 million apart in contract discussions with Kaepernick. That line in the sand led to the trade ultimately never happening.

Kaepernick could have taken over the reigning Super Bowl Champions, but decided not to take the pay cut. It’s hard to blame him for that, considering the very physical nature of the game he plays.

With that said, it was also frustrating at the time because Kaepernick had not been playing his best football, and the Broncos were seemingly taking a shot in good faith that he could return to form with a better situation around him.

Can Elway put the rejection from Kaepernick behind him?

Let me answer that question with another question — Did Elway put the past in the past with Brock Osweiler?

What Osweiler did to the Broncos was far more savage and shocking than what Kaepernick did. What Kaepernick did was nothing short of a free agent negotiation not working out. What Osweiler did was pull the rug out from underneath the Broncos.

And yet, just a couple of years after the Broncos watched Osweiler leave for the Houston Texans in free agency, he was back on the team as a backup quarterback.

How much money did Osweiler turn down from the Broncos compared to Kaepernick?

It seems like it doesn’t make much sense that the team would welcome back Osweiler with open arms and not Kaepernick, especially considering this team has employed some of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL in the last four years.
