Surprise 4: De’Vante Bausby looks like a starter

All throughout preseason play, De’Vante Bausby was looking like a really nice pickup for the Broncos, but where the heck did this guy come from?

The Broncos picked up the Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie lookalike after he had a stellar showing with the San Antonio Commanders in the AAF, the same league where Mike Purcell played his most recent pro ball before coming to the Broncos.

Bausby, with great length, speed, and ball skills, made a significant impression during preseason play but an even more promising one in regular season play prior to suffering a serious spinal injury against the Chargers.

Bausby replaced Isaac Yiadom for part of the Broncos’ loss to the Green Bay Packers, and immediately proved himself to be an upgrade over the struggling 2018 third-rounder, breaking up three passes in three games and racking up 12 total tackles.

The sample size is probably too small to make any bold declarations, but based on what we saw from Bausby in both preseason and regular season play, it looks like the former AAF star has what it takes to start in the NFL, or at least play on a consistent basis.

Bausby is a restricted free agent after this season, so he will likely (thankfully) be back in Denver for 2020.
