The Denver Broncos, at 3-6, have been full of surprises in the 2019 season. What have been some of the most surprising developments?

You don’t expect a 3-6 season to be full of many positive surprises, but the Denver Broncos have experienced their fair share of ‘good’ despite heading into their bye week at last place in the AFC West.

Is it surprising that the Broncos are 3-6 at this point? Not entirely, but considering how some of these games have ended up, it’s fair and almost oddly comforting to say it’s at least a disappointment to be 3-6 at this point.

The Broncos could have easily won three games that were decided by field goals in the final seconds, and Vic Fangio stated prior to the Broncos leaving for the bye week that 3-6 was the absolute ‘worst’ the team could be at this point. The Broncos’ three victories have been fairly convincing, including a shutout win over the Tennessee Titans in which the Broncos got starting quarterback Marcus Mariota benched.

Although every NFL team deals with injuries, growing pains from some players, and lack of consistency from others, the Broncos are not going through anything totally abnormal by NFL standards this season, but I do believe this team is a tick better than their 3-6 record indicates.

The Broncos have a top-five defense, and the offense has been significantly held back by the play of quarterback Joe Flacco.

Flacco’s ineptitude, for what it’s worth, would lead the list of ‘least surprising’ things in 2019. Most of us had to talk ourselves into that move from the start, and it predictably didn’t work out for either the Broncos or Flacco.

But what about the rest of this squad? Let’s take a look at some of the biggest surprises — good and not so good — for the Broncos in the 2019 season so far.
