The Broncos have found it challenging finding an ILB since Danny Trevathan left after Super Bowl 50. Alexander Johnson has helped fill that empty void.

Inside linebacker has been a tricky position for the Denver Broncos to fill for some time. Ever since Danny Trevathan’s departure, the position has dealt with some scrutiny. And with Brandon Marshall declining, the team was in trouble.

I was one of those fans that was upset that the Denver Broncos did not get either of the Devin’s in this past NFL Draft. I knew Devin White was going to be a bit of a reach, but Devin Bush was right in Denver’s lap. Instead, the Broncos traded that pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Little did I know that the Broncos already had what appears to be a inside linebacker in the organization. Alexander Johnson has been such a pleasant surprise for the team since he got his first chance to become the starter a few weeks ago against the Chargers.

With Josey Jewell dealing with an injury, Johnson stepped in and has so far not looked back. He recorded his first interception in his first start, recorded his first sack the following week, and had a great game last Sunday against the Cleveland Browns recording 13 tackles.

His performance has earned him the AFC Pro Football Focus Defensive Player of the Month for October. For someone who is only five starts in, this is quite the accomplishment. Not only that, but he might have put himself in the discussion as a longtime starter.

While I will pump the brakes on that statement, he has proven that he can be the sure-fire tackling machine that Denver has been searching for. The fact that he is also an undrafted free agent adds another player with that accolade to the Denver Broncos resume.

This team is known for its undrafted players. If Alexander Johnson pans out, this would be the biggest accolade since Chris Harris Jr.

There is still a lot to be determined for the future of this undrafted gem, but Alexander Johnson has taken his opportunities and made the most of them so far. Here is hoping that it continues.
