Reason 1: This is John Elway’s ‘thing’
Say what you want about John Elway’s inability to find the long-term solution at quarterback for the Denver Broncos, but his aggressiveness in pursuit of veteran players at the position is at the very least admirable.
Elway will almost stop at nothing to sign or trade for veteran quarterbacks who are known commodities at the position versus drafting guys.
Let’s take a gander through history with this, shall we?
- 2012: Signed Peyton Manning
- 2016: Agreed to trade for Colin Kaepernick (yes, that actually happened)
- 2017: Wanted to sign Tony Romo (after drafting Paxton Lynch the year before)
- 2018: Were interested in Kirk Cousins
- 2018: Signed Case Keenum
- 2019: Traded for Joe Flacco
Elway once said he’s not done swinging (at the risk of missing) at the quarterback position. He’s obviously going to keep doing what he has to do to get it right and perhaps he would see Cam Newton, who is just 30 years old, as a viable ‘long-term’ solution.
Would it really surprise anyone, given Elway’s lengthy history of pursuing the latest QB castoff, if he went after Newton?
