The Denver Broncos are, at this point, unsettled at the quarterback position. Would they try to get Cam Newton if he were available in 2020?

Cam Newton has played three games against the Denver Broncos in his NFL career.

Back in 2012, Newton and the Panthers hosted the Broncos, who were amidst an absolutely dominant winning streak. The Broncos went into Carolina and just kept right on pounding to the tune of 36-14, and Newton was limited to 58 percent passing with two touchdowns, two interceptions, and seven sacks.

In 2015, Newton was named league MVP and the Panthers were rolling over just about everybody in the NFL until they met the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium for Super Bowl 50.

That game was glorious, wasn’t it?

Newton was held to 43.9 percent passing, no touchdowns, one interception, and six more sacks in that game.

Then in 2016, Newton’s Panthers came to Denver for the season opener. Surely the Broncos could not best the former top overall pick three times in a row.

They did.

Newton completed just 54.5 percent of his passes in that game against the Broncos with a touchdown and an interception as the Broncos won 21-20.

The Broncos and the former number one overall pick, Heisman-winning MVP at the quarterback position for the Panthers have a history, and it’s not a great one for Cam.

Otherwise, the guy has had an outstanding career. But the Broncos have been Superman’s Kryptonite.

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em?

That’s not so crazy of a question at this point with the Panthers placing Newton on injured reserve, ending his 2019 season and possibly his tenure with the team. Those aren’t my words, those are the words of reputable guys in the NFL like Adam Schefter, Jay Glazer, and even a Panthers beat reporter.

The reason why some people are saying this could be the end of the road for Newton in Carolina? He’s due almost $19 million of a non-guaranteed base salary next season. The Panthers would save all of that against the cap if they let him go or trade him.

Before the Broncos make any adjustments to their roster in 2020, they are projected to have over $70 million in cap space.

Could Cam Newton be on John Elway’s shopping list?

It seems and feels unlikely at this point, but it’s not that crazy of an idea, and I want to look at three reasons why it may happen or at least be strongly considered by the Broncos.
