Ronald Leary, G (Shelby Manning)

Ronald Leary was thought to be one of the best free agent signings by the Denver Broncos in 2017. He was part of a great Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line, and it seemed that perhaps the Broncos had struck gold.

However, this has not come to fruition so far. Leary had a long list of injuries as he came to Denver, and has accumulated more since, landing on IR in at the end of 2017 with a back injury and in October 2018 with an Achilles injury. If that trend were to continue, Leary is on pace to be placed on IR at some point this year as well, although that is not a definite at all.

On top of injury, Leary has also struggled in his time with the Broncos, especially in 2019 with penalties. Leary is just a small part of a large problem that is the Broncos’ offensive line, but has been a flat-out disappointment so far.

It would be in the Broncos’ best interest to attempt to find a trade partner.

What the Broncos could get in return

If the Broncos do find a trade partner for Leary, it is not likely that they would get anything higher than a sixth or seventh round pick.

It is also worth keeping in mind that Leary’s contract is not up until 2021, so whoever were to take him on would be taking on another year of his contract as well.

What teams could be interested

Atlanta Falcons

If the Falcons were to bite on both Wolfe and Leary, the Broncos could send the two in a package-deal. While the Falcons offense in general has been bad, Matt Ryan has no protection. The Falcons could (and should) be looking to add some protection to keep their franchise QB upright. Atlanta may have one of the youngest lines in the league, and perhaps it would be to their benefit to add some more age to their line.

Tennessee Titans

It is no secret that QB Marcus Mariota has been absolutely abused so far in 2019, and now that may transfer on to Ryan Tannehill as well, if he is their option going forward. Taylor Lewan’s return from suspension really did not make much of a difference, either. The Titans will likely be looking to make some moves, and may be interested in trying with Leary.

Miami Dolphins

Although the Dolphins are likely interested in building up as many draft picks as they can, their offensive line has pretty much been depleted due to injury. Don’t forget Laremy Tunsil being traded to Houston.

If the Dolphins want to know what they have in QB Josh Rosen, or don’t want Ryan Fitzpatrick to be destroyed, it would be in their best interest to find at least a little help on the offensive line. Leary could fit the bill for the Dolphins.

Additional thoughts on Ronald Leary

While the named teams could be potential trade partners, there really is no guarantee that the Broncos will even be able to find a team interested in trading for Ronald Leary.

His injury history alone may scare potential buyers away, and his struggles with the Broncos are another factor. Mike Munchak has been acclaimed as one of the best offensive line coordinators in the NFL, and if Leary has struggled as much as he has in Munchak’s system, that may scare any interested programs as well.
