To put it simply, Tristan Wirfs is pretty much how you would draw up an offensive tackle in a lab if you could pick ideal traits, size, athleticism, and potential.

The good news for the Broncos is, there are at least two tackles in this year’s draft class who fit that description in Wirfs and Georgia’s Andrew Thomas, whom we will undoubtedly explore in a future mock draft.

Wirfs plays primarily right tackle for the Hawkeyes with Alaric Jackson manning the left side, but he has the feet and athleticism to transition smoothly to left tackle in the NFL.

So why would the Broncos be using a first-round pick on a left tackle with Garett Bolles on the roster?

In case you haven’t noticed, Bolles isn’t quite up to snuff. He’s not only playing with poor technique, but he’s also not learning or getting better it seems. The Broncos paid a lot of money for Ja’Wuan James to come in and play right tackle for them. They need to get him healthy and they need to pair him up with someone who can develop into a franchise cornerstone piece.

The physically dominant Wirfs can be that piece.

He’s an outstanding run blocker and is one of the strongest dudes to ever come through the Iowa program.
