Denver Broncos: De’Vante Bausby was temporarily paralyzed after friendly fire hit
It was a scary moment when Denver Broncos cornerback De’Vante Bausby was the victim of friendly fire vs the Chargers, and the result could have been worse.
The Denver Broncos got their first win of the 2019 season on Sunday but ultimately, more importantly, they lost cornerback De’Vante Bausby when he was struck by friendly fire and suffered a severe neck injury.
Bausby told reporters on Tuesday that he was paralyzed for 30 minutes following the hit.
That is a terrifying thing to think about, and even a more terrifying thing to experience. There is sometimes that uncertainty of whether or not you will ever regain movement in whatever body part you are paralyzed.
I personally have firsthand experience when it comes to being paralyzed, so I can imagine how Bausby would have felt. After going your whole life being able to move every body part and then all of a sudden not being able to, it is terrifying. I am sure there are better words for it.
Obviously, NFL players run the risk of suffering something as severe as paralysis. That’s just the nature of a contact sport as dangerous as contact football.
Bausby will miss some time as he recovers from the injury but it does not sound like what he went through will push him into calling it a career.
With Bausby out, we will see more of Duke Dawson Jr. and Davontae Harris. Bausby replaced Isaac Yiadom because of Yiadom’s poor performances, including the beginning of the game against the Chargers.
There has not been any word as of right now of whether or not the Denver Broncos will bring in another cornerback for depth purposes. I think it certainly is something the team should consider as they try and get their second win of the 2019 season, and second win in a row.
As for Bausby, I wish him good luck in his recovery. I hope it is a quick one.
