The Denver Broncos are at 0-4 to start the season. If they want any shot at being successful, they need to beat the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

The Denver Broncos have scored 17.5 points per game through four weeks. That ranks 27th in the league. The Los Angeles Chargers average 22.5 points per game this year, good for 14th.

If you do the math, that is a difference of five points—less than a touchdown. In Los Angeles’ two losses, they lost by a combined ten points.

In Phillip Rivers’ last meeting against a Vic Fangio team, (December of 2014 against the San Francisco 49ers), he threw the ball 54 times, completing 33 for 356 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.

Rivers was also sacked twice.

In the end, the Chargers came away with the victory in that game, but the 49ers were able to keep it close and make it into a five-quarter game.

Some of the issues with the Broncos this season is that anytime they fix something that was wrong the previous week, something new appeared to be wrong. That could be a huge issue against the Chargers offense this time around.

Not only do the Chargers have a great quarterback in Philip Rivers, they also have a star running back in Melvin Gordon, who, after a holdout that ended last week, is expected to play.

The Broncos cannot afford to let the Chargers start strong. They have played while behind on the scoreboard for most of the year (obviously, as their 0-4 start suggests). This team is not very good and especially not good enough to play from behind.

Unfortunately that is the truth, and it hurts. It hurts bad.

I am hopeful that the run game gets going on a strong note against Los Angeles. As I wrote the other day, Phillip Lindsay is on pace for an unusual, unfortunate statistic. It is something that he, and the Broncos, would love to turn around.

If the Broncos can limit their penalties overall, they should have a nice shot at winning their first game of the 2019 season.
