Denver Broncos: John Elway should be applauded for finding Shaq Barrett
By Andrew Wade
Shaq gets a starting role
So he decided to sign with the Buccanneers for a meager $4 million for a 1-year deal. Given how expensive edge rushers cost, based on some of the ridiculous takes people are throwing around, I would have expected quite a few teams to be hot on Barrett’s price for that bargain. Yet, they weren’t.
Over the course of five-ish seasons in the NFL, Barrett has been passed over three times by all teams not named the Denver Broncos and once by all teams not named the Denver Broncos or Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
So why aren’t we commending John Elway for seeing something in this guy that no other teams saw?
Elway had the wherewithal to sign this guy off the street, store him on the practice squad, and place a second-round tender on him. If you are questioning the Bradley Chubb draft selection, then you, again, know nothing about the Denver Broncos. John Elway and company had a trade agreed upon to move back in the draft, but they felt a player of Chubb’s caliber was so good they couldn’t pass up on him despite needs at many other positions.
It was not planned. It just happened. Good GMs don’t overthink things like that.
To say this is just another reason John Elway sucks is just embarrassingly pathetic analysis. If anything, we should be giving him a nice round of applause for finding a guy that nobody else did, multiple times.
