Denver Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles had a rough game against the Chicago Bears, but head coach Vic Fangio is sticking with him. But for how long?

Plenty of question marks have been exposed on the Denver Broncos during the first two weeks of the 2019 season (as well as during the preseason, honestly). One of those weaknesses is on the offensive line. Garett Bolles continued to struggle.

Despite Bolles’ struggles, though, Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said he is sticking with his left tackle.

Bolles has had a history of committing penalties, specifically holding penalties. Against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, he was called for four of them. One of those penalties was declined, but it is very, very alarming that this continues to be a trend for the former first-round pick.

Here is a summary of penalties committed by Bolles:

  • (4:30 – 2nd) P.Lindsay left end pushed ob at CHI 47 for 20 yards (H.Clinton-Dix). PENALTY on DEN-G.Bolles, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at DEN 36.
  • 1st & 10 at CHI 41(2:42 – 2nd) (Shotgun) P.Lindsay left tackle to CHI 40 for 1 yard (I.Irving). PENALTY on DEN-G.Bolles, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at CHI 41 – No Play.
  • 2nd & 10 at DEN 13(0:36 – 2nd) (Shotgun) R.Freeman up the middle to DEN 14 for 1 yard (A.Hicks). Penalty on DEN-G.Bolles, Offensive Holding, declined.
  • 3rd & 12 at CHI 44(6:56 – 3rd) (Shotgun) J.Flacco pass incomplete deep left to C.Sutton. Penalty on DEN-G.Bolles, Offensive Holding, declined.

I understand Fangio’s stance on sticking with Bolles going forward, but at some point, something needs to change. At some point, the Denver Broncos need to entertain some sort of trade. The Broncos do not have the depth on the roster to just replace Bolles at left tackle, so a trade would be the way to go if or when they decide enough is enough.

This is extremely surprising to me that Bolles continues to struggle. The Broncos hired Mike Munchak away from the Pittsburgh Steelers to help the entire offensive line improve. Unfortunately, it remains the weakest link on the offensive side of the ball.

Guard Ronald Leary also had a number of penalties called against him, which is not good at all but it sort of made me think, “at least it wasn’t Bolles.”

I have no idea why penalties continue to be a problem for Bolles. I understand that he started playing football later than most, but he has had plenty of experience in the league. There needs to be some improvement by him at some point. I just don’t see it.
