Denver Broncos: What to look for in first meeting vs Raiders
How will the Broncos do on punt coverages?
One of the most talked about subjects during the preseason was the Broncos’ struggles when it came to covering punts.
We saw opponents start their drives in good field position far too often after a punt. It got to the point where head coach Vic Fangio suggested that the coaching staff would look into putting starters out on the unit.
Since that comment, the Broncos have brought in a couple of new players that will play on special teams, in hopes of eliminating the long returns, as well as helping themselves when it comes to returning punts.
They brought in former Pittsburgh Steeler Diontae Spencer to take over as the primary punt returner. Spencer returned 191 punts for 2,162 yards and two touchdowns during his time in the Canadian Football League. That caught the eyes of the Broncos, so they decided to give him a shot.
Spencer also returned 90 kickoffs for 1977 yards in the CFL.
Hopefully he is the man to kick the Broncos’ special teams unit into high gear to start the 2019 season.
