Joe Flacco restructures contract with Denver Broncos
By Tylor Walden
The Denver Broncos and Joe Flacco have worked to restructure the quarterback’s contract. This could loom huge for future contracts in Denver.
As we wait for the 2019 season to begin for the Denver Broncos, Joe Flacco made a move that could benefit his new team in the long run. The former Ravens quarterback agreed to a contract restructure for this season.
How was it restructured? The team turned the majority of his contract this year into a signing bonus. They also made the last two years of his contract into a chance for the Broncos to void his contract. While he is still owed near $45 million in the next two seasons after 2019, restructuring his deal makes way for some future moves for potentially this season and farther.
The Denver Broncos have some decisions to make next year regarding some of their players. Players like Justin Simmons, Andy Janovich, Adam Gotsis, and Will Parks to name a few will be free agents next offseason. And let us not forget that Chris Harris Jr.’s contract will be up after this season.
By restructuring the contract of Joe Flacco, it gives the team a chance to work on some contracts with these key players. The contract restructure could also provide a chance that if the Broncos were to find another playmaker perhaps during the trade deadline, they could go out and do that.
It could also provide another plan for the Broncos once the 2021 season ends.
If the Denver Broncos decide that they have their quarterback of the future ready whether that is Drew Lock, Brett Rypien, or anyone else, the team could void those years and make him a free agent.
This contract restructure could really give the Denver Broncos some flexibility for the foreseeable future. It was a good move by both parties. A chance to improve the roster while Joe Flacco tries to prove to himself and the Broncos.
