Analyzing Vic Fangio’s decision for weekly captains
Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said after practice on Monday that the team will go into the 2019 season with game captains selected weekly.
Each NFL team has several captains on each side of the ball (offense, defense, special teams). The Denver Broncos are going to be taking a different approach.
Head coach Vic Fangio said after practice on Monday that the team is going to have weekly-selected captains.
You would think that the best players would be selected for the year. That was usually the case in prior seasons. Now, however, whoever wants to be a captain will have to earn it.
I think that this is a great approach. Coach Fangio is not a guy who will just hand his players everything. He has made it clear that if you want something, you have to work for it.
This decision will allow unexpected players the opportunity to step up into a leadership role. It also is a clear sign of a culture change around the team. Things have been different, in a good way, since Fic Fangio took over the head coaching job of the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos will still have the obvious captains (quarterback Joe Flacco, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, linebacker Von Miller, cornerback Chris Harris Jr), but there is no such thing as too many leaders.
Picking weekly captains is not new to Fangio. He did the same thing when he was the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. I think it is safe to say that this is a really good decision. If it weren’t, he would not have decided to do it again.
It will be very fun to see who will be selected each week as a captain. How many will be on each side of the ball? Maybe that will be the same.
I cannot wait to see how this influences the team going forward.
