Denver Broncos: Get to know the newcomers to the roster
If you’ve been reading Predominantly Orange for a while, first of all — thank you.
Second of all, if you’ve been reading PO, the Broncos claiming Diontae Spencer from the Steelers is not the first you’ve heard of the guy.
Spencer was one of the subjects of our pre-roster cut trade candidate lists and was again among the players listed in waiver wire players the Broncos should consider.
Spencer is a fun pickup for a wide variety of reasons.
First and foremost, he is a legitimate weapon on kickoff and punt returns.
On a whopping 191 punt returns in four seasons with the CFL, Spencer averaged 11.4 yards per return and had two punt return touchdowns. He also racked up nearly 2,000 kickoff return yards in that time.
He proved that talent could transfer over to the NFL level this offseason when he averaged over 11 yards per return again with the Steelers, including two explosive 30-plus yard returns.
Spencer also had three first-down receptions and two explosive plays as a runner out of the backfield of 19 and 29 yards.
Back in 2014 at his McNeese State pro day, Spencer was clocked at 4.34 in the 40-yard dash and had a ridiculous 40-inch vertical jump.
If he is able to make a substantial impact in Denver as a returner and offensive weapon, his story will come full circle.
His story is already incredible as it is.
Of all the moves the Broncos made, this one excites me the most because I think it’s the one we’re going to see the most immediate impact from.
Spencer is going to be a game day active against Oakland, and he’s going to return punts and if he’s suited up, the Broncos might as well try to get him the ball in space a few times to see what he can do there as well.
Denver ran a ton of stuff with receivers in motion throughout the preseason, and if you put this guy in place of another receiver on those jet sweep plays, he has speed to burn.
More on this move later, but this is a good one for the Broncos.
