Denver Broncos: Get to know the newcomers to the roster
The Denver Broncos have a new (probably temporary) backup quarterback, and it’s Brandon Allen from the Los Angeles Rams.
Allen was a three-year starter at Arkansas and really improved his senior season there, and that got him picked in the sixth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Broncos have had a couple of shots at quarterbacks in the 2016 class already, including the recently cut Kevin Hogan (a fifth-round pick by the Chiefs) and their own former first-rounder Paxton Lynch.
In my mind, there were more intriguing and probably more talented options available than Allen, but this is not a move to be upset about.
John Elway said that, ideally, the player they signed to replace Hogan would be both a prospect they like and a player who is familiar with their offensive style/concepts.
Allen fits those criteria.
The move to sign a player like Allen, whose insertion into the lineup would probably not be great for the Broncos if they needed him, seems to indicate Drew Lock is probably going to be a short-term IR candidate rather than out all season.
Allen has a strong arm and can make plays with his legs. He had a few really nice throws against the Broncos when the two teams faced off in preseason play.
