Denver Broncos: Kevin Hogan cut as roster approaches 53
The Denver Broncos cut QB Kevin Hogan as they bring the roster down to 53 players. Is there another QB coming in we don’t know about?
As the Denver Broncos work to get their roster down to 53 players (or fewer, possibly), they have cut veteran quarterback Kevin Hogan, according to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver.
Hogan’s preseason with the Broncos this offseason, in an offense he talked about being a perfect fit, was just not good enough.
There were some decent moment from Hogan, but those moments were sprinkled between longer stretches of inconsistent and flat out poor play.
After carrying Hogan on the roster all of last year and re-signing him to a one-year deal in the Spring, the Broncos are moving on.
What does this mean?
Well, this is an interesting move for a few different reasons.
First of all, at the time of this writing (this could all change in the blink of an eye), Brett Rypien is still on the team.
It’s possible the Broncos saw enough from him in practices and games that they don’t want to subject him to waivers at this time. It also feels more likely they will try to get him onto the practice squad, and based on what Rypien showed in preseason, you would have to think teams would probably let him pass through waivers.
Still, you never know, and you don’t want to lose guys you believe have developmental potential.
There’s also the possibility that the Broncos believe they have a good chance of getting an upgrade on the waiver wire, trade market, or as a veteran cut.
As a matter of fact, Brian Hoyer was released by the Patriots shortly after it was reported Hogan was released by the Broncos. He could be an option after week one.
I think a lot of people in Broncos Country agreed that Hogan, who didn’t even complete 51 percent of his preseason passes, had to go, but also thought that the Broncos would hold onto him because of his ‘experience’ with Drew Lock’s thumb injury.
Once Lock comes back, he’s expected to be the backup, but the Broncos need someone competent enough to run their offense if Joe Flacco gets hurt while Lock is still out.
