CJ Beathard/Nick Mullens, QB, San Francisco 49ers

At this particular point in time, neither Kevin Hogan nor Brett Rypien appears to be a viable option for the Broncos as a backup to Joe Flacco.

If the team is forced to put Drew Lock on IR for half the season, it would be wise of the team to pursue an upgrade.

The San Francisco 49ers are under no obligation to trade one of their two backup quarterbacks, but acquiring one of the two makes sense for the Broncos for a variety of reasons.

1. They are both better than Hogan/Rypien
2. They both know Rich Scangarello and could pick up the offense easily/quickly
3. They are both under team control for a couple of years

One reason I think the 49ers could be specifically looking to trade Beathard? He didn’t play at all in their most recent preseason game.

With all teams in action on Thursday night, we’ll see if Beathard plays then or if the 49ers keep him on ice so they don’t risk injury.
