Jerald Hawkins, OT, Pittsburgh Steelers

Sometimes one of the biggest factors to look for with guys getting traded from one team to another is a coaching connection.

The Broncos obviously brought Mike Munchak over this offseason from the Pittsburgh Steelers, so I scoured the Steelers depth chart to see where there might be a guy they could look to trade or get rid of.

Since the Broncos really just need depth at tackle, I thought the prime candidate would be 2016 fourth-round pick Jerald Hawkins, who has consistently shown flashes of promise and potential in the NFL but has failed to stay healthy.

The Broncos don’t necessarily need to give up huge assets for an injury-prone backup tackle, so perhaps Hawkins is more ideally a waiver pickup, but I wanted to put his name out there because he’s played well this preseason and Munchak has familiarity with him.

He’s played 272 snaps this preseason, 151 at left tackle and 121 at right tackle.

The Broncos have Elijah Wilkinson as a swing tackle/guard but getting Hawkins back in the room with Munchak could be a really strong move for his career. The Broncos would have to be cautious about what they’d give up here, perhaps another fringe roster player, because of his injury history and the fact that he’s in the final year of his contract, but he’s intriguing.
