Denver Broncos safety Su’a Cravens seemed to indicate he’s on the roster bubble with a pre-game tweet to Broncos Country.
Many have assumed all offseason that Su’a Cravens could be on the chopping block, but after a strong start to training camp and preseason play, it looked like he’d solidified a spot as one of the top four safeties on the team.
Now, that seems a little uncertain.
Cravens took to Twitter on Thursday ahead of the Broncos’ game with the Arizona Cardinals saying, “If this my last one in a Broncos Uni let’s do it for Mile High one mo time! BRONCOS COUNTRY FOREVER”.
If anyone would know whether Cravens is on the roster bubble, it’s Cravens himself.
Cravens’ tweets are protected, but the entire tweet — posted with an image of him in last year’s Color Rush game against the Pittsburgh Steelers — reads like this:
"I’ll love you Denver, forever and always ! I can honestly say this is the closest Ive ever been to a community and my teammates id die for. If this my last one in a Broncos Uni let’s do it for Mile High one mo time! BRONCOS COUNTRY FOREVER#BroncosCountry #OrangeCrushSu’a Cravens on Twitter"
Cravens had one bad play against the Rams where he ran into cornerback De’Vante Bausby, resulting in the Rams getting a big-chunk play of 40-plus yards.
Other than that, he missed a game due to injury and has seemed solid when he’s played otherwise, especially playing downhill in the running game.
The Broncos would save over $852,000 against this year’s salary cap by cutting Cravens.
The issue is, with Dymonte Thomas suffering a knee injury that has him on crutches, are the Broncos going to go into the season with one of Trey Marshall or Shamarko Thomas behind Kareem Jackson, Justin Simmons, and Will Parks?
Cravens’ contract is more than affordable, and his upside is tremendous, but the production has to be there as well.
To be fair, Cravens’ tweet does not indicate that he is for sure playing his last game with the Broncos. Vic Fangio has consistently talked about each game being an important evaluating tool for the team and Cravens has a chance to go out in front of the home crowd and put on a show.
Give the Broncos no choice but to keep you around.
