Go figure, the Broncos’ first-round pick is a standout player.

High expectations don’t always equal great immediate results, so it’s nice to see the first rounder really making a positive impression as a receiver and blocker in the initial stages of his NFL career.

For whatever reason, people thought Fant couldn’t block coming out of Iowa. The guys he’s putting in the ground would disagree with that.

Fant is making some solid plays in the passing game and he’s also making an impact in the running game. He hurt his ankle against the 49ers, so we may not see him until the first regular season game against the Oakland Raiders, but he’s proven enough in practices and in the preseason games to show the coaching staff he belongs out there with the number one offense.

You know what’s crazy to think? If Fant continues on this positive trajectory, he could represent one piece of the first back-to-back John Elway first-round picks to actually work out.

Derek Wolfe was a second-round pick in 2012 (although he was the team’s top pick) but other than that, I don’t think the Broncos have made back-to-back great picks in the first-round of the NFL Draft yet in Elway’s tenure.

If Garett Bolles can become a strong left tackle, even better (and back-to-back-to-back).
