Richie James, wide receiver/returner

The 49ers have gone from having somewhat laughable depth at wide receiver to having some pretty nice depth.

Getting a year like they had last year with so many injuries will suddenly make the bottom of your depth chart look solid when you add talented players to the top of it.

The 49ers drafted some offensive weapons in 2019 with Deebo Samuel in round two and Jalen Hurd in round three. Both of those players are listed at wide receiver and unless the 49ers decide to keep six receivers, Richie James could be the odd man out.

He’s currently listed as the first-team kickoff returner and was one of a very few players in the league last year to take one back to the house. The Broncos don’t necessarily need a sixth wide receiver, but James — a seventh-round pick for the 49ers in 2018 — knows the offense the Broncos are running and could provide a spark in the return game.

The 49ers probably aren’t going to use him a ton on offense this year, and the Broncos might not either, but perhaps Denver could talk the 49ers into sending them an upgrade in the return game for the right price.
