Denver Broncos: Undrafted players with the best shot at making the team
Brett Rypien, quarterback
Will the Broncos keep three quarterbacks?
Brett Rypien is going to have to force the issue here.
It appears as though the Broncos are inching towards Drew Lock ‘officially’ becoming the primary backup to Joe Flacco. If Lock is named the backup QB, it makes Kevin Hogan expendable, but not necessarily for Rypien.
The Broncos may view Rypien as their version of a Nick Mullens or CJ Beathard, players Rich Scangarello coached up in San Francisco.
Rypien was undrafted out of Boise State but he put up great numbers there, started a lot of games, understands the game well, and makes smart decisions most of the time. Most of all, he is the type of player who could probably operate an offense in his sleep.
Rypien is the prototype system starter in the NFL, and if he puts together some nice tape over the next three preseason games, he could force his way onto the roster.
At this point in time, it feels like the Broncos could sneak him through to the practice squad, but that could very well change in the coming weeks.
Rypien is a smart, talented kid who could have probably picked any number of teams coming out of college. The Broncos have to be careful they don’t get sniped of a player they feel has developmental potential just because they have to carry an extra player at another position due to injury right now.
