Denver Broncos celebrate their 60th Birthday
By Tylor Walden
As one of the original members of the AFL, the Denver Broncos are celebrating their 60th birthday in the franchise’s history.
On a summer day in August of 1959, the beginning of one of the original members of the American Football League broke ground into bringing the sport of American Football to the Denver area.
A successful minor league baseball owner by the name of Bob Howsam was awarded a football team in Denver on this day sixty years ago. He was responsible for helping build Bears Stadium in Denver, Colorado. The yellow and brown uniforms you might have seen ten years ago as part of the 50th anniversary of the AFL forming were the first ones the Broncos wore in their early years.
The team has gone through so many changes since then. No longer do they done the yellow and brown, but the orange and blue that you see today. Early on, the uniforms were mostly orange. But blue became a part of their identity the season the team won their first Super Bowl.
Denver is credited for winning the first AFL game, beating the Boston (now New England) Patriots. Also to their credit is becoming the first AFL team to beat an NFL team, when they won against the Detroit Lions.
Coaches like Red Miller, Dan Reeves, Mike Shanahan, and Gary Kubiak were some of the men that led the team on the sidelines. And we cannot forget the multiple players that have contributed to the success of the Denver Broncos organization.
And we cannot forget about the owner that helped lead the Broncos to three Super Bowl titles. Yes, I am looking right at you Pat Bowlen.
Sixty years is a long time. While there have been other major league teams that have been in business for longer, Broncos Country sure is happy that they can have a team for as long as they have without moving locations.
Happy Birthday Denver Broncos. We are looking forward to another season.
