Su’a Cravens should fit nicely in Denver Broncos defense
The Denver Broncos acquired safety Su’a Cravens back in 2018. This year should be a golden opportunity for him if the team uses him right.
Su’a Cravens was brought to the Denver Broncos last year in a trade with the Washington Redskins. Unfortunately, Cravens played in just five games in his first season in Mile High.
He was injured last year and eventually had knee surgery. Cravens would end up on injured reserve/return. Unfortunately, he would be inactive for multiple weeks. He recorded eighteen tackles in 2018.
Cravens has the ability to play both safety and inside linebacker. However, Broncos coach Vic Fangio said a while back that Cravens needed to make the roster as a safety—not a linebacker.
I do not agree with that idea. Sorry, coach.
The Denver Broncos decided to move safety Jamal Carter to inside linebacker and see if he can succeed at that spot, upon his very own request. Both Carter and Cravens are hard-hitting players.
Why not try both at inside linebacker?
Vic Fangio likes versatile players. There is no reason to limit Cravens’ contributions to being a backup safety. I know that with Todd Davis and Josey Jewell, Cravens would not always be on the field, but allowing him to sub in multiple positions would greatly benefit his usage.
Cravens recorded two tackles in the Hall of Fame game vs the Atlanta Falcons and four tackles against the Seattle Seahawks.
This is just my opinion, but lately it seems like Cravens is motivated to be a better player for the Denver Broncos. That is good for both sides.
During the 2019 offseason, Cravens did slim down to make the transition to safety, but that does not mean that he cannot still play inside linebacker. Sure, you want a bigger player there, but like I mentioned, Cravens is a hard hitter.
With the injury to inside linebacker Joe Jones, the Broncos made Carter Davis’ backup. Maybe Cravens could compete with fellow inside linebacker Alexander Johnson for the backup role to Jewell.
The truth is, anything is possible. There may be a situation in the future that makes the Broncos strongly consider a position switch for Cravens.
Whatever they do with Cravens, I think that he will see the field a lot more than he did last season with a coaching staff that knows how to utilize their players.
I am rooting for Cravens to have a big year in this new Broncos defense and hope that the team sees his potential all across the field.
