Explanations: Defense

Is Dekoda Watson sticking?

The Broncos traded a fifth-round pick for Dekoda Watson, but if the roster necessitates, it feels like they have a viable alternative at least defensively with Malik Reed stepping up.

If the team needs a spot on the 53, his name was one I was looking at as one that could be shuffled around.

If Watson was brought in for his defensive abilities, he’s been out-played by Justin Hollins and Malik Reed, who will count far less against the salary cap this year.

Jamal Carter at ILB?

Vic Fangio said if things work out well for Carter at inside linebacker, he can stick there. His roster spot may hinge on it.

Carter is capable of being a top flight special teams player in the NFL but he has to be able to contribute defensively as well. He could be the team’s temporary replacement for Joe Jones as well as a viable option on the inside.

Only four corners?

The Broncos’ secondary can be constructed creatively. As things stand currently, one injury at cornerback would not completely destroy the Broncos. Kareem Jackson, if need be, could move from safety to corner, and the Broncos could slide Will Parks and/or Su’a Cravens in at the safety spot.

Parks should also be playing more nickel and dime corner this year, in my opinion.

The Broncos have so much versatility on the back end, they could really only carry four ‘cornerbacks’ on the active roster heading into the season and keep a fifth or more on the practice squad.
