Denver Broncos: Three key storylines for Hall of Fame game
By Andrew Wade
3. Surprise guys poised to make an impact
Every year, there are two or three camp favorites who come out from relative obscurity to make the team. Last year, the biggest one was Philip Lindsay, who had a great preseason after signing as an undrafted free agent.
This year, there are a number of guys clamoring to be that surprise guy to make the roster, and standing out, even if it’s just one or two plays, could be instrumental to getting playing time later in the preseason and even making the roster.
Here are a few guys to be on the lookout for.
Josh Watson, LB
The inside linebacker spot is arguably the weakest spot on the team, and the best opportunity for an unknown guy like Watson to make the opening day roster. Despite his status as a UDFA, he’s been getting a few looks on the first team even.
Khalfani Muhammed, RB
It’s evident the Broncos want to improve their depth at running back after flirting with pass-catching running back Theo Riddick earlier this week. Muhammed has elite speed, and despite his ability to pass block, Devontae Booker’s career in Denver looks close to done. Muhammed could make the decision easy with a strong first game.
De’Vante Bausby, CB
Talk about a story. Bausby has had a few cups of tea in the NFL and after a strong performance in the now-dead American Alliance of Football, he signed a deal with the Denver Broncos. He’s had a great camp so far and is currently listed as the 4th cornerback.
Juwann Winfree, WR:
When a team trades up in the sixth round to draft a guy, you know they at least think highly of him. Winfree, a former CU Buff, is the 5th man on the depth chart, which means he will be seeing some playing time tomorrow evening. A strong start to preseason will create separation for between him and the other candidates vying for those last 1-2 spots.
After tomorrow night’s game, there could be a few more guys added to this list of players who could shock Broncos Country and make the team.
Needless to say, although most starters won’t be playing, there is plenty to watch in the Denver Broncos first game of the preseason, and I for one, am certainly pumped to watch these storylines play out.
