Bryce Callahan, CB

When the Broncos signed Bryce Callahan, it was with the assumption that he would take the nickel cornerback spot with Chris Harris taking outside duties. It turns out, we were both right and wrong about that.

As the Broncos have gone through camp, it’s become apparent that Callahan will not only be a starting outside corner when the Broncos are in their base defensive look (with Kareem Jackson playing safety) but Callahan will also play outside when the Broncos go to nickel, with Harris moving inside.

And Callahan has been really good at that so far in camp.

Not that we should be surprised. Callahan has been developed by the guys on the Broncos’ coaching staff since he was a UDFA in the 2015 draft class out of Rice.

Vic Fangio and Ed Donatell know Callahan’s skill set as well as anyone, and so far through camp, it looks like putting him as an outside corner is the right move.

Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell had this to say about Callahan playing the outside CB spot:

"“In Chicago we played him there. You just didn’t see him much, it was mainly in preseason over the years. We put together—Vic is the guy behind that—he put together a tape and he said, ‘I think he can play here for us and work into this new combination.’ When we looked at his whole body work over those four years, we saw what we liked. To answer your question, he has the speed and quickness. He processes really well outside and he has good ball skills.” Ed Donatell (quotes via Broncos PR)"
