CB2: Desmond King, Los Angeles Chargers

Graham Tiedtke

King is a solid cornerback for the Chargers. According to Pro Football Focus, King has been the best at covering slot receivers over the last two seasons. He has allowed a passer rating of just 83.3 for quarterbacks throwing to the slot.

That includes giving up less than one yard per coverage snap at that spot on the field. He is solid at blitzing and stopping the run.

King has tremendous ball skills. In two seasons with the Chargers, he has intercepted four passes, including three in 2018.

That’s not where his positive traits end though. King has made 138 tackles in his two seasons with Los Angeles, including 76 in his rookie year. He ranked 38th in the entire AFC and eighth among AFC West defensive backs with 62 tackles.

He has the mental awareness to stay ahead of his receiver in terms of route running and has nine pass breakups in his two NFL seasons. With time and experience, I expect him to improve on that.

King is good with where he needs to be in terms of covering his man. He makes it difficult for quarterbacks to fit the football into the hands of the wide receiver. He is also patient when preparing to make a tackle. He does not overthink his position but waits until the ballcarrier is close.
