Marcus Simms could interest Denver Broncos in supplemental draft

The Denver Broncos have left no stone unturned this offseason and West Virginia WR Marcus Simms could be of interest in the supplemental draft.

The Denver Broncos have never used a supplemental draft selection in the John Elway era, but West Virginia wide receiver/return specialist Marcus Simms might be worthy of a look.

Simms entered his name first into the NCAA transfer portal before it was reported by Tony Pauline that he had entered himself into the supplemental draft mix.

The 6-foot, 194-pound receiver totaled over 660 receiving yards in each of the last two seasons, including seven touchdowns.

He scored eight touchdowns in three seasons at West Virginia and made some big plays deep downfield for the Mountaineers.

Will Grier was one of the best deep ball throwers in the country and when you watch his receivers work, it’s easy to see why.

I thought Gary Jennings was obviously the class of this group at winning downfield, but Simms was a nice third option in the passing game and every highlight you see of this guy is him burning someone deep downfield.

Not only can he win deep, but he can also help in the return department.

He led the Mountaineers with 9.7 yards per punt return this past season and was their leading kickoff returner as well.

Whether Simms is coveted by NFL teams will likely depend on what he can run in the 40-yard dash and how well he works out coming up. He probably needed another season of college tape to get teams to invest heavily in him and he was probably trying to transfer elsewhere to play with a more established QB, but things didn’t work out.

He was named the WVU special teams player of the year by their coaching staff in 2017 and was a second-team All-Big 12 selection as a return man that year as well.

The Broncos obviously have a huge hole in the punt return department but are probably hoping former third-round pick Brendan Langley can lock that spot down.

Teams are certainly frugal with their draft picks when it comes time for the supplemental draft, and my guess is Simms has a shot to be a 6th-7th round pick if anything. If not, he will get to choose his situation and that would be pretty ideal for him.

If that’s the case, I could see the Broncos being as likely as any team. They have plenty of talent at WR on the roster, but Simms’ experience as a return specialist could give him an edge for a 6th WR spot.
