Joe Flacco

Age: 34
2019 cap hit: $18.5 million
Years under contract: 3

The Broncos traded a fourth-round pick for Joe Flacco early on in the offseason, an apparent indicator of their lack of interest in the 2019 quarterback class.

That turned out to not necessarily be the case, but Flacco’s presence did prevent the Broncos from ‘reaching’ for someone at the quarterback position and he’s been impressive all throughout OTAs (organized team activities).

At the end of OTAs, it seemed like every review of Flacco’s performance through the offseason was positive. That’s good news for the Broncos, who traded for a guy who was Wally Pipped of his job in Baltimore last year.

Though Flacco was once a Super Bowl MVP, he’s been average at best for the past four seasons since playing really good football for Gary Kubiak in 2014.

The Broncos hope a return to a similar type of offense under new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello can help Flacco reach whatever his ‘full’ potential is at this point.

John Elway, who won a couple of Super Bowl titles in his late 30s, said Flacco is entering his prime.

We’ll see about that.

The Broncos don’t need Flacco to come in and throw 40 touchdown passes (although that would be nice) but they need him to be better than average, which last year was somewhere around 21 or 22 touchdowns.

Most importantly, the Broncos need Flacco to not be a liability.

As sad as it is to say, if Flacco can merely be above average he will provide the Broncos with their best QB play since the first half of the 2014 season.

Will a better cast around him as well as a different type of offense help Flacco with his efficiency rate? Can he play at a high enough level to get the Broncos into the playoffs?

Time will tell.
