Denver Broncos: Most Disappointing Seasons in team history
By Tylor Walden
2005 Denver Broncos Season
As a Denver Broncos fan, this was the first season that ended in disappointment for me. I know that there was the 1999 season, but this one really hit home with me. Denver started ugly, getting thrashed by the Miami Dolphins 34-10. But then would win some key games.
Denver even defeated the defending AFC and NFC Champions in the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles. Their two losses against the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs were by a combined five points.
The team finished with a 13-3 record, which was best for second in the AFC behind the Indianapolis Colts, led by Peyton Manning. In their first home playoff game since John Elway’s retirement, the Broncos dispatched the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots 27-13. With the Colts losing the next day, it seemed like a Super Bowl return was in the cards for the Broncos.
Sadly, the Broncos were defeated soundly by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game 34-17. The team did not come out to play, as they saw themselves down 24-3 at the half. Turnovers hurt them in the worst way.
Before Peyton Manning arrived, I seriously believed this team had what it could take to win another Super Bowl. But it just was not meant to be.
