New system installation

In order to cancel the last day of practice — and make no mistake, that is significant — you have to be confident about where you’re at with your system installation as a new head coach.

NFL teams are only allowed a certain number of practices. That number is a bit increased when you have a new head coach, but Vic Fangio is nothing if not extremely confident in himself, his methods, and where things are currently at for the team.

"“I wouldn’t say all of it, but I think 90 percent of our concepts are in and then you can tweak them as you go. There’s still a little but we haven’t put in… I think the offseason has been really good and really productive from every angle. I think the guys have done a good job learning our systems. I think they’ve put forth great effort. They’ve done a good job practicing. I’ve got no complaints about the offseason.”"

So, the last 10 percent can wait. I mean, John Elway is out here getting dunked for crying out loud.

You’ve got Matt Russell standing in the background eating a delicious frozen treat, John Elway in a dunk tank, and everyone laughing it up and having a great time.

You think this was a good call by Fangio?

Team camaraderie is one of the greatest assets you can have in the NFL. If your team is a group of guys there to do a job, you’re going to fail. If your team is a group of guys there to win and have fun doing it, you’ve got a shot.

You can never take yourself too seriously, although there is a time and place for all business.

Fangio knows his team has to play in a fifth preseason game when four is already probably too much. He knows they have to come back to work early because of that extra preseason game.

He’s not worried about that last 10 percent because these guys are putting in the work when they’re supposed to be, and I love the move by a ‘rookie’ head coach who has seen how players operate in this league for a long time and understands how to speak their language.
