Philadelphia Eagles: Sam Bradford to Carson Wentz
The Plan: Fake like someone’s your starter, then trade ’em
The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Carson Wentz as a successor to Sam Bradford, but his succession was supposed to be probably along the same lines as the Smith-Mahomes transition.
Bradford, one of the most injury prone QBs in the game, netted the Eagles a first-round pick in a trade when Vikings starter Teddy Bridgewater went down with a gruesome knee injury in training camp, and the Eagles decided to expedite the development process.
Again, they were better for it.
Letting Bradford play with Wentz waiting in the wings would have been a waste of time for the Eagles. They got really lucky and got a first-round pick to trade him away at the last minute before naming Carson Wentz their opening day starter.
Was the Vikings’ offer simply one they couldn’t refuse, or would the Eagles have just traded Bradford to the highest bidder no matter what?
