Denver Broncos: 5 succession plan models for Drew Lock
Green Bay Packers: Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers
The Plan: Play the long game
The Green Bay Packers were in a very unique situation back in 2005.
Aaron Rodgers was supposed to be one of two players under consideration for the number one overall pick, which ended up being Alex Smith. When he started falling in the draft, the Packers couldn’t pass on the kind of value he presented.
Despite his lofty draft status, Rodgers remained on the bench for three full seasons, and didn’t become a starter in the NFL until he was 25.
All is well that ends well, I suppose.
The Packers got three years of really good play out of Brett Favre before he was traded to the Jets and went through his whole retirement ordeal before ultimately ending up on the Vikings.
Favre had a number of great years left in him, but the Packers moved on after his age 38 season, and rightfully so. How could they know he would play at an MVP level for the Vikings in his 40s?
The Packers got out on Favre a little earlier than they probably needed to, but Rodgers helped them win a Super Bowl in 2010.
