Denver Broncos: Five prospects Elway passed on during 2019 NFL Draft
By Andrew Wade
Drew Lock, QB, Missouri
Before you huff and puff, I openly will admit this is sort of cheating because the Denver Broncos did ultimately take Lock, but when they traded down to 20 I started thinking that it may be significantly more plausible than had they taken him at 10. Moreover, with two second-round draft picks as capital, I thought there may be an opportunity for Elway to trade back in the first round when Lock continued to fall.
So in my mind, Denver passed on Lock at least once, if not twice (if you buy into the notion that he was a possibility at 10).
Ultimately, this huge gamble paid off for the former gunslinger-turned-GM as he was able to secure Lock’s services in the second round, but it was a huge gamble.
What I found interesting about this was Elway made it clear after day one that there were no first round players on his board (including Lock). Either that was just a cover for his true intentions, or they truly don’t value Lock that much, or they didn’t allow the position of quarterback to increase value unnecessarily.
Either way, it worked out for him, but this was the second big pass of the evening by Elway.
