Wide receiver was not a high priority, but the Denver Broncos took a project from the University of Colorado, Juwann Winfree.
Juwann Winfree has speed, athleticism, and is the right project to potentially move up the Denver Broncos depth chart at wide receiver.
During his time with Colorado Buffaloes, he dealt with numerous injuries. One was a high ankle sprain. There’s a strong connection between Winfree and fellow former Buff and current Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay. They both share the same agent (Mike McCartney) and it looks like the team didn’t want to make the same mistake of not drafting a possible local stud again.
Winfree unquestionably has the size, speed, and traits to be a tremendous developmental prospect. He will be given time to grow and mature into a bigger role. Denver has a decision to make on Emmanuel Sanders in the future and adding a player line Winfree solidifies depth at the position.
There’s plenty to like about Winfree. He shined at one of the all-star appearance bowl games.
There’s a chance Winfree can make it as a pure slot machine in Denver. That bodes exceptionally well for DaeSean Hamilton taking a larger role in the future.
Wide receiver is looking like it will be a deep group. Courtland Sutton, Emmanuel Sanders, Tim Patrick, Hamilton, and now Winfree is impressive, to say the least. The routes from Winfree are sharp and clean. Even in and out of his breaks he looks smooth for his size. It makes you wonder if the injury history is the only thing that dropped Winfree down boards.
What are the experts saying?
Juwann Winfree is an interesting upside play. I'll admit I had about 20 WRs left on the board I had ranked higher.

Insights from T.C. McCartney who's obviously very close to the program could've been key here.
Good for WR Juwann Winfree - injures hurt his production in college, but he has NFL talent. 6-1, 210 with 4.51 speed. Ex-Maryland.

If the #Broncos are patient, Winfree can stick on a roster.
Broncos draft #CUBuffs wide out Juwann Winfree in the sixth round. Speedy, athletic and tall. We never saw his best in Boulder due to some injures.

We’ve selected Colorado WR Juwann Winfree in the sixth round. He’s a tough, physical player with a lot of top-flight traits with his size, speed and hands. Great to add another player with in-state ties to the Broncos. pic.twitter.com/tnR8z29XUv

Juwann Winfree tells us that he didn’t know the Broncos had this level of interest in him.

Juwann Winfree stayed in Colorado to train ahead of the draft at Landow Performance. I remember someone who knows him well telling me: "If you thought Phillip Lindsay surprised, wait until you see Juwann Winfree."

The Denver Broncos are now finished with the 2019 NFL Draft and have a chance to be extremely active in the undrafted free agent market.
What will John Elway do next?
