Chris Harris Jr. update

Though the excitement for the draft cannot be contained, the contract/trade situation surrounding cornerback Chris Harris Jr. provided a most unwelcomed black cloud over the top of an otherwise joyous occasion.

As the second round ticked away, I thought we might see Harris traded to the Colts, or Browns, or Texans, or someone, but it never happened.

The Broncos kept Harris through the first three rounds of the draft, and here’s my take on that — they’re not trading him.

John Elway said after the day two festivities that he’s looking forward to a face-to-face meeting with Harris, which his agent then squashed by saying if Elway wants to talk to Harris about a contract, that’s what his agent is for.

It sounds and looks like Josina is communicating directly with Chris’ agent here. If this is Chris’ stance, this is their last bit of leverage. They were probably hoping for a trade yesterday so Harris could go to a team guaranteed to be willing to give him a new contract, but Elway said there was no traction on Harris trade talks.

The Broncos have been pretty open throughout this whole process, which is interesting.

We’ll see how it all ends up, but it certainly feels like Harris is going to have to figure things out with the Broncos unless Denver can get good value for him in the 2020 NFL Draft.

It looks like this situation is nowhere near done, but for the Broncos to come away from day two of the draft not trading Harris is an indicator to me they do not plan to trade him at all.

We’ll see.
