BALTIMORE, MD – SEPTEMBER 23: Chris Harris Jr. #25 of the Denver Broncos reacts as his blocked field goal return for touchdown is nullified by a penalty in the second quarter of the game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium on September 23, 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland. No Chris Harris Jr.

Though Vic Fangio’s defense is expected to be great in Denver, he will open his first OTA session without the team’s top defensive back Chris Harris Jr.

Harris is sitting out voluntary OTAs because he would like a new contract and some long-term stability.

I don’t blame him.

Harris’ extension was already a bargain for the Broncos and he deserves to get paid for constantly playing above the level of his current contract.

John Elway stated publicly the team will look to negotiate a new contract for Harris after the 2019 NFL Draft, which is now just over a week away.

Will Harris’ absence linger into the offseason? Will the Broncos — gasp — trade him?

I am going to be optimistic here and say I doubt either of those things happen. The Broncos need Harris in their program. He was part of John Elway’s first rookie class as an executive and is like the first rare card you ever pulled as a little kid, or the first lofty prediction you got right.

Harris is Elway’s first ever UDFA gem, and he will someday be in the Broncos Ring of Fame.

Could he really part with him? I don’t think so.
