Dwayne Haskins impressed Broncos by wearing Elway’s jersey

You don’t often hear of NFL Draft prospect wearing his potential boss’ old jersey to an interview, but that’s exactly what Dwayne Haskins did.

The pre-draft interview process is as much about players impressing prospective teams as it is about teams trying to figure out which players they want to take.

Dwayne Haskins, the Ohio State quarterback who came out after his redshirt sophomore season, apparently came to Denver not only during a snowstorm but wearing a classic John Elway jersey.

We talked yesterday about the idea of Haskins and whether or not he is a legitimate candidate for the 10th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, which is now just two weeks away.

With two weeks to make a decision, the Broncos appear to be drifting away from the quarterback position in round one rather than being drawn to it, and the move to wear an Elway jersey to his interview with the Broncos helps Haskins stand out.

Nevermind that he wore no. 7 at Ohio State and we all know a quarterback wearing no. 7 is just like a basketball player wearing no. 23. Certain numbers will always be synonymous with certain players, and a quarterback wearing no. 7 is almost always in honor of Elway.

That was apparently true for Haskins.

So what did Elway think of the choice in apparel?

"“But Haskins’s boldness seems to have paid off, as multiple sources said Broncos personnel—and, according to a source who was there, Elway himself—saw the humor in it and appreciated the gesture.”SI.com"

As we wrote yesterday, Haskins — or any quarterback for that matter — has to go into Denver and convince Elway he can’t live without them. Haskins used a form of flattery and humor that certainly wouldn’t be lost on Elway, who has stated in the past his desire for players who want to be Denver Broncos.

He said that shortly after Brock Osweiler decided to decline his offer and bolt for Houston.

Haskins is showing here not only a desire to be a Bronco but a specific admiration for Elway.

We saw some behind the scenes photos from Drew Lock’s visit to Denver, and he was wearing a suit. Everyone approaches these interviews differently, and wearing a jersey is certainly a risk, but it seems to have paid off for Haskins.

Every little bit counts, I suppose.
