Daniel Jones and Kyler Murray will visit Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos have visits lined up already for Drew Lock and Dwayne Haskins. Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones will also visit the team facility.
Will John Elway and the Denver Broncos take a quarterback with the 10th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft?
“Well, we’re doing all our homework,” Elway told Denver Broncos media. “And that’s the key thing is we want to do all our homework and open up the door to, you know who knows what we’re going to do at 10?” (quote transcribed from the video below)
Elway understands that, at this point in the offseason, there’s no point in getting your heart set on one specific player. After all, in the 2018 NFL Draft, he was fortunate to be able to select Bradley Chubb, a player the Broncos didn’t think would have any chance of being on the board at five overall.
Will Kyler Murray be on the board at 10? Probably not. But Elway isn’t going to go into the NFL Draft blind when he could get to know the Heisman winner firsthand, despite the comments he’s made publicly about the challenges a shorter quarterback would face taking snaps under center.
The Broncos will be bringing Murray to Denver for a pre-draft visit, per Elway himself, and will be doing the same for Duke’s Daniel Jones, Missouri’s Drew Lock, and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins.
Elway saw Lock play live this past season in a game against Arkansas. The Broncos also met with West Virginia’s Will Grier and Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham at the Scouting Combine and will hold a private workout in Illinois with Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson.
According to Elway, these interviews are an opportunity to get to know the players personally, work them on the board (see how they are with the Xs and Os of football), and generally just spend more than a quick 15 minutes with someone you might be investing a top 10 draft choice in.
I don’t believe this is a smokescreen from the Broncos, but a genuine open door to let these young players know they could be the future quarterback of the Denver Broncos.
What will it take to convince Elway to use a high draft pick on one of them? We’ll find out in April, but it’s good to know the Broncos aren’t just putting every egg in the Joe Flacco basket.
I still view it as unlikely the team will use a 1st-round pick on a quarterback this year, but if one of these guys blows them away on their visit, that could change.
