Adding to the cornerback position

This is where things could get really fun for the Broncos in free agency.

This year’s cornerback crop — like just about every other position — is loaded with boom or bust types of guys. It’s also loaded with really good slot players.

Though no one on the free agent list is as good in the slot as Bryce Callahan (Bears), he’s pretty darn close and good enough to allow the Broncos to leave Harris at the outside cornerback position on a more permanent basis.

I love the idea of signing Callahan as one of the team’s premiere signings while also taking a calculated risk on a former high draft pick who has either struggled with inconsistency, fit, or injuries.

The Houston Texans just released former first-round pick Kevin Johnson. He’s still young and possibly a fit for Fangio’s defense.

Jason Verrett is a stellar player when healthy, and might be willing to take a one-year deal to prove himself.

Steven Nelson of the Chiefs played on a bad defense but picked off four passes last season.

Kareem Jackson is a physical corner and might be able to be had for a reasonable price at the age of 31 this season.

Pierre Desir is another risk/reward player who earned a long-term deal after a strong season in 2018 with the Colts.

There are so many attractive options here at the cornerback position, and it would be disappointing if the Broncos didn’t try to sign at least a couple guys to compete for roster spots and significant playing time.
